Online Gaming Report: Increases Seen in PA, NJ; Numbers Dip in Michigan

Online gaming saw some growth in two of the country’s major legalized iGaming states for August. Pennsylvania Casinos and New Jersey Online Casinos both saw some nice increases while all Michigan online casinos numbers were down slightly.

Live gaming fared well in all three states with a hefty rise seen in Pennsylvania. Here’s a look at August’s live and online gaming numbers.

Pennsylvania

Gaming saw some significant increases in the Keystone State in August. Total gaming revenue including slot machines, table games, online gaming, PA sports betting, fantasy contests, and video gaming terminals rose 7.5% for the month compared to August 2022, according to the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board.

The combined total revenue generated from all forms of gaming for August reached $457.2 million. Total tax revenue generated from all forms of gaming, live and online, was $189.4 million.

The Hollywood Casino was the top revenue generator for the month at $75.2 million, an increase of 23.4% from last August’s revenue of $61 million. Parx Casino checked with the second-highest revenue, up slightly at 1.2% from last August at $57 million.

On the iGaming front, online casino games generated gross revenue of $145 million during August compared to $107.2 million in the same period in 2022, an increase of 35.3%. Tax revenue generated from online gaming was $63.2 million. Here’s a look at online gaming revenue in each category:

  • Slots – $105.3 million
  • Table games – $37.3 million
  • Online poker – $2.4 million

For sports wagering, the state saw a total handle of $393 million for the month, an increase of 8.3% above last August’s $363 million. Online sports betting produced revenue of $19.3 million while live betting produced $2.7 million. Fantasy contests produced another $841,087 in revenue as well.

The taxable revenue from that total saw a dip year over year, however. That figure for August totaled $22 million, 35.1% lower when compared to the same time period in 2022, which was $34 million. During the 2022-23 state fiscal year, the gaming industry has generated over $2.3 billion in tax revenue.

New Jersey

The New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement reported some increases in gaming totals overall including a major jump in online gaming. The state’s nine live casinos in Atlantic City accounted for $280.3 million in revenue for August, an increase of 2.3% compared to $274.0 million for the same month in 2022. Year-to-date revenue stands at $1.9 billion, a growth of 2.3% compared to $1.88 billion for 2022.

Online gaming saw revenue of $155.3 million in August, up 18.1% compared to $131.4 million from the same period in 2022. Year-to-date iGaming revenue was $1.24 billion, up 14.6% from the $1.1 billion in 2022.

Sports wagering gross revenue reached $96 million in August, a 47.1% increase compared to $65.3 million in 2022. Year to date, sports wagering gross revenue stands at $597.9 million, up 42.7% over the $418.9 million from the same time in 2022.

In iGaming, total revenue was $531.6 million for August, reflecting growth of 12.9% from $470.7 million reported in 2022. Year-to-date online total gaming revenue has reached $3.8 billion, growth of 11.2% from $3.38 billion in 2022.

Michigan

In the Wolverine State, commercial and tribal operators reported a combined $175.4 million in total online gaming and sports betting gross receipts in August. This was a decrease of 0.4% compared to July, according to the Michigan Gaming Control Board.

The overall total includes online gaming gross receipts of $152.2 million and online sports betting revenue of $23.2 million. In July 2023, iGaming gross receipts were $153.6 million and gross sports betting receipts were $22.5 million.

Combined total iGaming and online sports betting adjusted gross receipts (AGR) for August were $153.1 million. Broken out, that total equals $137.2 million from iGaming, a decrease of 0.7% compared to July 2023, and $15.9 million from sports betting, a 3% decrease.

Compared to August 2022, iGaming AGR was up by 16.8% and sports betting was down by 1.3%. Total online sports wagering handle totaled $218.5 million for August, up by 8.8% from $200.8 million in July. These numbers produced reported $29.7 million in taxes and payments to the state including:

  • iGaming taxes and fees – $28.6 million
  • Online sports betting taxes and fees – $1.1 million

The three Detroit casinos paid the city $7.3 million in wagering taxes and municipal services fees in August. Tribal operators reported making $3.6 million in payments to governing bodies for the month as well.
