Superbook Added to the List of Online Sportsbook Closings

With the start of the NFL football season just around the corner, the list of sportsbook operators pulling the plug on their services continues to grow.

On Friday, Las Vegas-based Superbook Sportsbook announced closing its online sportsbook business in eight states but will remain operating in Nevada.

Superbook is the third sportsbook cutting back on services this month. U.K.-based BetFred Sports announced it will close its online sportsbook in Maryland on July 31 along with Betway closing the same day in Virginia and other states.

“We regret to inform you that Superbook Sports will no longer be accepting wagers, deposits, or new accounts in Colorado, New Jersey, Arizona, Tennessee, Ohio, Iowa, Maryland, and Virginia effective July 19, 2024, at 8:00 p.m. ET,” the company announced on X. “You are free to withdraw your funds.”

The sportsbook is operated by SBOpco LLC based in Las Vegas, Nev. The company operates a retail sportsbook at Westgate Las Vegas Resort & Casino (formerly the Las Vegas Hilton).

Operators Coming and Going

Just last month the Maryland State Lottery & Gaming Control Agency stated that operators coming and going in the market will be no surprise moving forward.

“This was not the first time this has happened in Maryland. I don’t think it’s gonna be the last time,” said Maryland Lottery Director John Martin. Martin was referring to BetFred’s departure from Marlyand at the time.

Superbook in Maryland

Superbook launched in Colorado in June 2021, New Jersey in August 2021, Arizona in December 2021, Tennessee in April 2022, Iowa in October 2022, Ohio in January 2023, Maryland in April 2023, and Virginia in October 2023.

SuperBook initially opened a retail lounge at Camden Yards, home of Major League Baseball’s Baltimore Orioles, but the location wasn’t ready to take bets. Maryland Lottery officials awarded an online sports wagering license to the company weeks after the lounge opened.

In Ohio, SuperBook Sports partnered with FC Cincinnati as the official betting partner of the MLS team with a retail betting location in downtown Cincinnati at Taft’s Ale House.

BetFred Leaving Ohio

In addition to its departure from Maryland, BetFred announced recently it will also close online services in Ohio.

In an email to customers, BetFred said, “In agreement with the Ohio Casino Control Commission,” customers should be aware of the following important dates:

  • July 31 – Last day to deposit.
  • August 14 – Last day to wager.
  • August 31 – Last day to initiate a manual withdrawal of funds.

bet365 Goes Live in Pennsylvania

bet365 Group Ltd. gained access to the KeyStone State after entering into a multi-year agreement with Presque Isle Downs & Casino located in Erie, Pa. The casino is a subsidiary of Churchill Downs Inc. (CDI).
